In a business or professional enterprise, the Project Management Office (PMO) is the department or group that defines and maintains the standards of processes, generally related to project management, within the organization. The PMO strives to standardise and introduce economies of repetition in the execution of projects. Why a Project Management Office?

According to a KPMG survey of 252 organisations, technology is not the most critical factor in project management. Inadequate project management implementation constitutes 32% of project failures; lack of communication constitutes 20% and unfamiliarity with scope and complexity constitutes 17%. Accordingly 69% of project failures is due to the lack and/or improper implementation of project management methodologies. 

Virtual Project Management office definition (VPMO)  

In a Virtual Project Management Office (VPMO), the resources allocated to the core PMO role are outsourced while the project managers running the projects can be either internal or external.  A VPMO will take over the following responsibilities:  

  • implementation of methods, tools and processes needed in the enterprise environment in order to increase the success rate of projects.
  • follow-up of project results in order to adapt the methods and tools according to past experiences and lessons learned
  • training and coaching of project managers in the methods and tools in order to be compliant with professional project management discipline.

However, it will not allocate the resources to the projects.  That responsibility must stay within the enterprise.
